Air Fryer Cheese and Ham Croquettes

These Air Fryer Cheese and Ham Croquettes are a crispy, cheesy delight with a creamy interior filled with ham and gooey cheese. Using the air fryer keeps them lighter than traditional deep-fried versions, making them perfect for appetizers, snacks, or even as a side dish. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making these croquettes in an air fryer.

Ingredients:
For the Filling:
1 cup finely chopped cooked ham
1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, gouda, or a mix of your choice)
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup whole milk (or any preferred milk)
Salt and pepper, to taste
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional, for extra flavor)
For Coating:
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs, beaten
1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
Olive oil spray (or any cooking oil spray)
Instructions:
Step 1: Make the Filling
Cook the Roux: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
Add Milk: Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens into a creamy sauce. This should take about 5-6 minutes.
Season: Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg to the sauce, and stir to combine.
Add Ham and Cheese: Stir in the chopped ham and shredded cheese until melted and well incorporated.
Chill the Mixture: Transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover it, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight) to firm up the filling for easier shaping.
